Father George’s Letter, May 2005

Filed under: Letters from our Rector — George Young @ 4:31 pm

Dear friends in Christ,

Do parts of our liturgy ever jump out at you in the middle of us worshipping together? They certainly do for me. In fact, as I preside, sometimes I need to remind myself that my first responsibility while presiding is to lead the worship, not stop and reflect on how powerful the words are. Sometimes that’s a challenge.

In the middle of the burial service for our dear brother Boots Lewis, one of the petitions of the Rite I prayers of the people did just that – it jumped out at me. It says:

Help us, we pray, in the midst of things we cannot understand, to believe and trust in the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, and the resurrection to life everlasting. (BCP, p. 481)

Letters from the Bishop added as a Category

We have posted several letters from Bishop Howard lately, so it seemed a good idea to add a new category in the “blog” portion of our web site. That way his letters will remain for an indefinite period of time, allowing one to go back and review them in light of new events in the church.

Your comments about this and other features of our site are welcome. We are still looking for volunteers to provide the various schedules for the web site, as well as other contributions of content.

Father George’s Letter, April 2005

Filed under: Letters from our Rector — George Young @ 8:04 pm

Dear fellow journeyers on the Way,

Wow – Christ is really risen, isn’t he? I heard a good one this morning, that is, an expression after the resurrection: “Christ on the loose!”

I am so thankful to be on this side of Easter, aren’t you? Lent lasts a long time, as I suppose it should. It sure is nice not to have to swallow any more “Alleluias”, but to just go ahead and say it. “Alleluia!” Umm hmm - feels good.

What a wonderful Lent, Holy Week, and Easter we’ve had! I believe our Lenten series, “Bread For the Journey”, was one of our best ever. Holy Week began with a powerful Palm Sunday, with another successful “Liturgy of the Palms @ the Courthouse”. So good to have our Methodist sisters and brothers, as well as many other folks who joined us there in front of the Courthouse. It really feels right to parade up Centre Street, following the bagpiper on our way to the church.
