MINUTES - June VESTRY MEETING
St. Peter’s Church - June 18, 2007
Fr George Young opened the meeting at 6pm. Present: The Rev. Kimberly Still, Neil Blalock, Ed Grissom, Cheryl Smith, Francis Flood, Trey Warren, Cathy Kaltenbach, Mary Lynn Torchia, Norma Norris, Ben Stephens, and David Lott. Absent: Neil Frink, Early McCall. Treasurer Jim Carpenter was present during the 1st half hour.
NEXT MEETING: August 13, 2007 @ 6 pm; Devotional: David Lott
Giving Campaign Report: Jim Carpenter handed out a Campaign Report dated 6/18, reflecting the most recent pledge which in fact put the total just over its minimum goal of $1,450,000. The report further shows that there is “net cash available” of over $120,000, meaning we can (and should) commence getting bids for the twelve Tier 1 Projects immediately. The various projects, their anticipated cost and position in the tiering, was a part of the report Jim made available at the meeting.
Jim felt it would be appropriate for the Vestry to approve the initial “tiering” of projects, particularly the Tier 1 Projects. Given that the “tiering” was based largely on feedback from the cottage meetings and that nothing would preclude revisions’ being made as circumstances might dictate, a motion to accept the “tiering” and to move ahead with the schedule as submitted was approved unanimously.
The last item mentioned was the need to have “project managers” identified, to assist the Wardens and others who will take the lead in seeking bids and monitoring work. Interested parties (or suggestions of those who might be) are encouraged to contact Jim Carpenter.
Treasurer’s Report:
Jim next moved to a brief review of the May and year-to-date financial report, which continues to reflect the favorable trends of the last several months. For the five months year-to-date, we are “in the black” by nearly $10,000 and favorable to budget by an even larger amount.
Vestry “Thank You’s”:
1) Jim and Nancy Carpenter, for their tireless and unwaivering efforts throughout the weeks of the Giving Campaign. Simply put: “We could not have done it without you!”
2) Giving Campaign Co-Chairs Neil Blalock and Trey Warren; those who hosted and assisted with Cottage Meetings; Staff & Parishioners who gave of their time, talent, and generous support, from beginning and into the present day, to ensure the unqualified success of the Giving Campaign.
3) Kristina Smith, Brenda Commandeur and the many members of the Parish community who assisted with and participated in the resounding success of our first Intergenerational Vacation Bible School, “Aslan on the Move”.
The Professor has given all his highest acclaim!
4) Eliza Rhoades and her many supporters who, with such dedication and care, assist in preparing and serving our bereavement luncheons and receptions.
Minutes of the May 14 Meeting were approved as submitted.
Rector’s Report:
O No Vestry Meeting in July - next meeting will be August 13 at 6pm; visitors welcome.
O Assistant Rector Kimberly Still was present at the meeting and will begin formally on July 1; Fr Young will host a Vestry/Staff reception for her at his home the evening before (June 30).
O A Vestry Nominating Committee will be formed prior to the next meeting, to develop a list of candidates for presentation at the Fall (Oct) Parish Meeting.
O Referring to the Strategic Plan developed at past Vestry Retreats, Fr George hopes to move forward with the hiring of a new music director (who ultimately would replace Martha Skirven when she retires) in time at least for part of our Sesquicentennial.
O Fr George would like to recognize the contribution that Patricia Shepard and John Rogers make in our worship by having them listed on our “masthead”. He will solicit ideas from Bishop Howard as to how that is customarily done (ie in other parishes).
O Lastly, Fr George referred to the Christian Formation conference he, Kristina Smith, May Lynn Torchia and the Corbetts attended at Kanuga in early June; and how productive and uplifting an experience he felt it was.
Senior Warden’s Report:
Neil expressed again his gratitude for all who gave so generously of their time, talent, treasure, and energy to the Giving Campaign.
Junior Warden’s Report:
Ed summarized a number of projects he and Bob Grant have been working on to keep the Parish campus looking tidy and well cared for.
Vestry Initiatives:
An updated Initiative sheet was distributed. No substantive change was reported on any of the Vestry Initiatives, each of which is being actively pursued.
There being no new business of note, the meeting was adjourned at 8 pm .
Respectfully submitted,
John C. Train, Clerk
