Owen P. Thackara1859 — 1886 On 11 June 1880 the Thackara family was enumerated by the census taker at their home at 123 Ash Street, Fernandina. Clergyman Owen, 61, and Eliza, 65, were natives of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, respectively. Their son Phillip, age 25, was born in Florida, was not employed, and was “idiotic.” In view of his mother’s age at his birth, one might guess that he had Down’s Syndrome. |
C.M. Sturgis1887 — 1892 |

Ebenezer Gay, Jr.1892 — 1898 Ebenezer Gay, Jr. was enumerated in the census on 24 June 1880 at Tomkins Cove, near Stony Point, Rockland County, New York. He was a 48 year old clergyman at The House of the Good Shepherd and was a native of Massachusetts, as was his father Ebenezer Senior, age 88, also a clergyman. Ebenezer Junior and his wife Josephine, 48, had a son Alexander, age 10. Mother and son were born in New York. One wonders how they came to Fernandina, and whether they enjoyed it here. For more information about this saintly man, see the New York Times article published on 14 Dec 1890 (a pdf document). In the 1900 census Josephine, a widow, and Alexander were in Bayonne, New Jersey. |
