Previous Rectors
For a complete list of our rectors see the History Page. Below are those for whom we have a picture. Owen P. Thackara 1859 — 1886 On 11 June 1880 the Thackara family was enumerated by the census taker at their home at 123 Ash Street, Fernandina. Clergyman Owen, 61, and Eliza, 65, were natives of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, respectively. Their son Phillip, age 25, was born in Florida, was not employed, and was “idiotic.” In view of his mother’s age at his birth, one might guess that he had Down’s Syndrome. | C.M. Sturgis 1887 — 1892 | Ebenezer Gay, Jr. 1892 — 1898 Ebenezer Gay, Jr. was enumerated in the census on 24 June 1880 at Tomkins Cove, near Stony Point, Rockland County, New York. He was a 48 year old clergyman at The House of the Good Shepherd and was a native of Massachusetts, as was his father Ebenezer Senior, age 88, also a clergyman. Ebenezer Junior and his wife Josephine, 48, had a son Alexander, age 10. Mother and son were born in New York. One wonders how they came to Fernandina, and whether they enjoyed it here. For more information about this saintly man, see the New York Times article published on 14 Dec 1890 (a pdf document). In the 1900 census Josephine, a widow, and Alexander were in Bayonne, New Jersey. | Benjamin F. Matrau 1899 — Interim | A.E. Johnson 1899 — Interim | J.M. McGrath 1899 — 1900 — Interim He is recorded in the Fernandina census on 25 June 1900 as George McGraffe, age 70, a preacher. He was born in Michigan in April, 1830, and was single. | S. Alstin Wragg 1900 — 1902 A Samuel A. Wragg is found in the Columbus, GA, census of 26 Apr 1910. He was a 34 year old “Episcopal clergyman,” a native of Georgia with a wife of nine years, Louise, age 33, a native of New York. They had two daughters, a seven year old born in NJ, and a three year old born in GA. | John H. Brown 1903 — 1908 | Francis Yarnell 1914 — 1915 In the 1920 census of Tallahassee, Francis Yarnell, age 44 and a native of Pennsylvania, was a priest at St. John’s Episcopal Church. He and his wife Mary, 39, also a Pennsylvania native, had five children, ages 3 to 14. All were born in Pennsylvania except the last two who were born in New York and Florida. Apparently they came to Fernandina from New York. | H. Mallinkrodt 1926 — 1940 | Richard Urban 1940 — 1945 | F.W. Golden-Howes 1945 — 1953 | Neil Gray 1953 — 1962 | James Ellisor 1963 — 1966 | Ralph Kelley 1966 — 1988 | | Lloyd Olsen 1989 — 1991 | Barnum McCarty, interim 1996 — 1997 |
