How It Works

Our St. Peter’s web site is hosted on a very large computer. In July, 2006, we developed a program that will send an email reminder every Tuesday to all persons who have assigned responsibilities the following Sunday. The emails are created automatically at 2 AM, a time when the server should not be busy.

The email addresses are stored in rosters on the computer in in a private directory (folder), completely outside of the public portion of our web site, protecting them from spammers. For the program to work properly we need:

• accurate schedules published on the web site
• an email address for each participant who wishes to receive a reminder
• the name on the schedule must be formed exactly like it is in the roster (The program looks at the name of a person on the schedule, then looks for that person in the roster to obtain the email address. Computers are actually pretty dumb and will not find a match if there is the slightest difference.)

The program is now working for the Altar Guild, bread bakers, Bread of Life (bread patrol), and men’s breakfast teams because these are the only activities for which we receive schedules.

Currently the only schedule submitted to the web-steward is that of the Men’s Breakfast Teams. The reminder program only works for those activites for which a schedule has been submitted.

Over the past few weeks your websteward recreated all of the pages of this site as WordPress Pages. On July 30^th, with a few tweaks, the old pages disappeared and the new ones took their place. Now when you select a page, the entire page is created on-the-fly using a style template. The content (text) is stored in a database. (more…)

For those with special browsers without JavaScript, and for those who have disabled JavaScript in their browsers, we have added a page that contains all the links found in our JavaScript pull-down menu. Others who have access to the pull-down menu may find the arrangement of all the links on a single page helpful.

In addition to the schedules on each ministry page, all schedules of those who serve at the liturgy (and others) now appear on one page accessed on the pull-down menu under “Worship.” It is our hope that this will make it easier for members to check their assignments.

To make it easier to print out the schedules, a printer-friendly version can be accessed from the Schedules page. It lacks the header and footer information, and the titles are a little smaller. It will also work in Netscape and Firefox browsers which have a bug that, at some web sites including ours, prevents the printing of multiple pages when the information on a web page will not fit on one page of paper.

Today we added a calendar to the web site. This calendar can be accessed simply by going to http://stpetersparish.org/calendar. Or you can use the Calendar item on the pull-down menu from any page on the parish web site.
